I Don't Think So...Dave (break-up #2)

Well, here we go. Sammy was officially out, and the word on the street was that Van halen was collaborating with former singer Diamond Dave for a couple new songs. Fans didn't realize how huge this thing was until the guys appeared on the MTV Video Music Awards in 1996 (pictured left). Anyone who knew the history of this group was absolutely floored by the site of this apparent reunion. Receiving a standing ovation, the original lineup of Van Halen walked out to present an award. It was truly a site, and then Dave started talking. Ed was obviously embarrassed by the way Dave was acting, even though you figure he would be used to it. They guys gave many interviews backstage, and during those Ed mentioned his hip surgery he was scheduled for. Apparently Dave was bitter that Ed kept talking about his hip, and yelled at him about it. That was the second dumbest thing David Lee Roth ever did. And before Dave could say "Wawazat", he was gone from Van Halen yet again. Dave claimed he was lead to believe that the reunion was a permanent thing. So to clear their name, the Van Halen brothers started doing interviews. From CNN to MTV, the guys went over and over "their" version of both the recent breakups. Ed to this day still swears that Sammy quit the band, and that problems had been surfacing ever since the OU812 album. The Dave story from the music awards night was much like I described, except Ed through in some drug references and tough guy talk about kickin' Dave in the crotch. It seems miraculous that neither situation was the brothers' fault, and they were just reacting to diffcult sitautions. Both Dave and Sam said the brothers were lying. Michael Anthony kept curiously silent through the whole ordeal. And just like that, Van Halen was in search for their third lead singer. As if you don't already know, click here to find out just who that was (I guess Patty Smythe was unavailable yet again).
